Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Our students develop and demonstrate leadership skills in a variety of ways. They are actively involved in supporting each other and working together collaboratively. Our Amigos are a group of dedicated older students who teach cooperative playground games to our Primary students. We also have the D.I.V.E.R.S. Leadership Group that helps lead our Character Education Initiatives, play days and other student activities. Our Welcoming Committee, which has representatives in all rooms, are student leaders who welcome and mentor new students arriving in the school. Finally, our students engage in a wide variety of sporting activities to develop leadership and sportsmanship skills.

Our staff brings a broad perspective and a wealth of professional and personal experiences to school to support our students. With a wide range of professional development experiences including additional professional qualifications, graduate degrees, and on-going professional development our staff work collaboratively to deliver high quality educational programs that motivate and challenge our students. Our professional book club focuses on meeting the needs of all our students in enhancing higher level thinking skills. We recognize the extraordinary efforts of our staff in a variety of ways through personal interactions/letters, assemblies, announcements, and formal recognition at staff meetings and at School Council meetings.

Last year, our School Council went through a process of rebuilding. During this time it hosted several exciting and informative sessions for parents. The Council also helped host the Multicultural Potluck Dinner and contributed to our school by purchasing yard toys and sports equipment. Many volunteers also donated their time and support through volunteering for field trips and in classes. Our volunteers truly help W.E. Gowling to succeed in supporting our students.

W.E. Gowling, in partnership with The Ottawa Network for Education, participates in the OttawaReads program thanks to the very generous donation of time through Corel and the City of Ottawa By-Law Division. Through this program, volunteers spend time reading with our primary students; they also donated time last year creating 3 beautiful flower beds in our entry courtyard. We are also fortunate to have similar partnerships with the Kiwanis Club and their support for early literacy in the schools. Many individuals choose to volunteer their time at W.E. Gowling in order to support school initiatives, student learning and to make a difference in the lives of our students.
